Dandelion Leaf (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion leaf is the herb I think of when fluid accumulates and the body's natural channels of elimination need support. When tissues feel waterlogged, swelling lingers, or the system seems slow to release what it no longer needs. Bitter and mineral-rich, Dandelion leaf is a traditional diuretic with a particular affinity for the kidneys and urinary tract, supporting the movement of excess fluid while contributing valuable minerals.

Ruled by Water and Venus, Dandelion leaf carries a fluid-moving, draining quality. Its bitterness connects it to the liver and the broader processes of elimination, while its primary affinity lies with the urinary system. Unlike harsher diuretics, Dandelion leaf is traditionally considered a nourishing, potassium-containing herb, which is a useful distinction when supporting fluid movement without overlooking mineral balance.

The leaf and root of Dandelion are related, but they are not interchangeable in traditional practice. The leaf is chiefly valued for its diuretic action and affinity for the kidneys; the root is more strongly associated with digestive bitters, hepatic function, and the movement of bile. Where the root tends toward the work of digestion and hepatobiliary function, the leaf directs more of its attention toward fluid balance and urinary elimination.
