Hops (Humulus lupulus)

Hop is the herb I think of when the nervous system cannot seem to find its off switch. When the mind keeps circling, the body remains wound tight, and exhaustion somehow fails to bring rest. Bitter and acrid, Hop is a deeply relaxing nervine with a particular affinity for states of nervous overactivity, restlessness, and tension that accompany depletion.

Ruled by Air and Venus, Hop carries a dispersing yet harmonizing quality. Its bitterness speaks to the liver and digestive system, while its relaxing influence extends into the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Hop is especially valued when agitation, muscular tension, and digestive unease appear together. Essentially, a body that is tired but still unable to settle.

Where Skullcap, for example, steadies frayed nerves and releases accumulated neuromuscular tension, Hop leans more heavily toward quieting excess and inviting repose. It is particularly suited to restless evenings, nervous irritability, and the kind of tension that persists even when the body is asking for rest.
