Sinew Balm
Comfrey-Rich Botanical Balm for Short-Term Tissue Care
Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. This formula contains comfrey, which may contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs).
When the body experiences a strain or sprain, the affected tissues need time, appropriate care, and a gradual return to movement.
Sinew Balm was formulated for these moments. Featuring a concentrated blend of comfrey root and leaf alongside arnica and calendula, this traditional herbal balm is intended for short-term topical care following physical strain.
Rather than an everyday body-care balm, Sinew is a more focused preparation for periods when particular areas need attentive, consistent care.
It is a tending balm: deliberate, restorative in character, and designed to be used with intention.
The Herbal Formula
Comfrey Root & Leaf (Symphytum officinale)
Traditionally known as knitbone, comfrey is the centerpiece of Sinew. Its long history of topical use in traditional herbalism informs the formula's focus on areas affected by physical strain.
Arnica (Arnica montana)
A traditional topical herb commonly incorporated into preparations for bruised and tender areas following physical exertion.
Calendula (Calendula officinalis)
Adds a soothing, skin-supportive dimension to the blend, complementing the formula's more concentrated comfrey base.
Cleavers (Galium aparine)
Rounds out the botanical infusion with a traditional herb associated with movement and fluid balance.
Energetic Profile
Deep, binding, restorative, and neutral to gently warming.
Sinew emphasizes a steady, restorative character rather than a pronounced warming or cooling sensation. Its philosophy is one of attentive care for areas that bear the demands of physical work, repetitive movement, and strain.
This is not a sports rub or a counterirritant balm. It is a traditional herbal preparation intended for a more focused period of topical care.
Who It's For
- Short-term topical care following physical strain
- Areas of everyday physical stress that need focused attention
- Bruised or tender areas on intact skin
- Hands, wrists, elbows, knees, hips, and lower back following physical exertion
Sinew does not replace appropriate assessment or treatment of acute injuries. Significant pain, swelling, deformity, or difficulty bearing weight warrants medical evaluation.
How to Choose the Right Balm
Choose Sinew for a more concentrated, short-term herbal approach to topical tissue care following physical strain.
Choose Ember Balm for ongoing body care involving overworked muscles, stiff joints, bruises, and everyday physical demands. Ember has a more movement-oriented energetic profile and is intended for routine use.
Each balm has a distinct purpose within the Morningstar collection.
Cycling Sinew Balm
Because the Sinew Balm contains a high concentration of comfrey, I recommend using it in short, focused cycles.
Comfrey is a remarkable traditional herb known for stimulating rapid tissue repair. However, it also naturally contains compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). While topical use on intact skin is widely considered safe, modern herbal practice favors moderation and cycling when working with comfrey-rich preparations.
Suggested use:
- Apply 2–3 times daily to the affected area
- Use for 7–14 days during active healing
- Then take a 1–2 week break before resuming if needed
This approach allows you to benefit from comfrey’s powerful restorative properties while respecting the traditional wisdom of short-term use for acute injuries.
